Compressor sales rebound and surpass pre-covid levels

Industry sold 486 million units last year; revenues totalized $42.4 billion, according to British consultancy

The global air conditioning, heating and refrigeration systems compressor market has recovered from the hit caused by the covid-19 pandemic in 2020, reaching 486 million units sold and a revenue of $42.4 billion in 2021.

Last year, 200 million air conditioning compressors, five million heat pump compressors and 281 million refrigeration compressors were sold, according to British consulting firm BSRIA.

This strong recovery, driven mainly by sales of rotary compressors intended for air conditioning applications, puts the market above its pre-pandemic level.

China is highlighted as by far the largest producer and buyer of compressors, especially rotary and scrolls, according to BSRIA's report.

However, with the US-China trade war and the signing of the Asian agreement that forms the largest free trade bloc in history, BSRIA sees the production of air conditioning units shifting to other countries, such as Thailand, and compressor sales growing as a consequence.
